Домены .TEL
Launching the new .tel TLD is firmly on track and a full launch plan will be announced in Q4 2007. !!!!
.tel is a top-level domain approved by ICANN as a sponsored TLD. It would be
restricted to "internet communication" services, and provide a supplement to the traditional numeric namespace for
telecommunication services (i.e. telephone numbers). It is sponsored by Telname Limited. In May 2006, it was approved to
be added to the global DNS root. The TLD was added to the root servers on March 2, 2007.
Since some of the sorts of services that will use .tel domains can be achieved on mobile telephones, there may be a
perceived overlap in the target market between this and the .mobi domain, also approved by ICANN in the same round.
However this perception is incorrect. In simple terms, ".tel" is about publishing contact data: phone numbers, SIP
addresses and so on. The focus of the .mobi domain is providing web sites and other content designed for the user
interface provided on mobile phones and other hand-held devices. An overview of the difference between the two sTLDs
can be found on the ICANN web site at http://www.icann.org/correspondence/mahdavi-to-twomey-04may06.pdf .
A second application for the same TLD name, but with a different structure, was made by a company named Pulver.
This proposal involved telephone number style numeric identifiers. Alternative viewpoints claimed that this either
complemented or conflicted with ENUM. All-numeric identifiers are not available in the form of .tel that has been approved.

What will the .Tel domain do?
The .Tel domain will provide seamless integration of existing methods of communication
with emerging technologies like Voice over IP (VoIP).
By leveraging innovative DNS (Domain Name System) technology, the .Tel domain will allow
anyone to publish and control, in real time, how they can be reached.
The .Tel domain will enable people to reach a business from any Internet enabled device
(computer or mobile) simply by typing, for example, "Hertz.tel". The user will then be
able to connect directly to a Hertz representative or navigate through a list of
services that Hertz may offer.
Businesses can easily extend their brands into this new space and enhance the way
customer inquiries are handled.
In addition, individuals can use the .Tel domain to publish and update their contact
information directly in the DNS. These individuals will decide, in real-time, by what
means their friends and colleagues will be able to reach them. This could include:
VoIP, conventional telephony (fixed-line or wireless), email, SMS, Skype, AIM and many more.
What is a Top Level Domain?
A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the suffix portion of all web or email
addresses. Internet addresses are read from right to left. Therefore,
the first or rightmost field is the Top or First Level Domain. For
example: in a website address such as www.CNN.com , the ".com" is the
Top Level Domain, and the ".CNN" is a second level domain.
What is a Sponsored Top Level Domain?
The Sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLD) is a TLD that is delegated to an
organization that has responsibility for the formulation and
enforcement of certain policies that would normally be formulated and
enforced by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers). The Sponsoring Organization represents the interests of the
TLD community.
Who would want to use a .Tel domain and why?
The .Tel TLD will provide all domain owners (Registrants) with an easily recognized Internet communications identity.
The .Tel TLD will allow corporate Registrants to extend their brands
into the Internet communications space. For example, the Hertz car
rental company is known on the web as www.hertz.com. For obvious
reasons, they may like to extend this brand to the Internet
communications space, and do this without building a new brand;
hertz.tel provides the mechanism to accomplish this brand extension.
For the customer, this provides a logical, easy-to-use and
easy-to-remember identity.
How will people access the .Tel?
Customers of the .Tel sTLD will store their contact details in the
delegated domain space in the form of NAPTR records, which can be
accessed by client software tailored to use these. Telnic intends to
release such open source client software for Windows, Macintosh and
Mobile phones, whilst a web browser proxy service will be available for
registrants who wish to use this, making minimal .Tel functionality
available to anyone with a web browser.
Why do we need an Internet communications specific TLD
In 1984, the Internet took the bold step of augmenting the underlying
numeric addressing system with a user friendly text-based naming
system. As a result, the Internet became easier to use and navigate.
The ensuing result was unprecedented growth that benefited an entire
industry.
Today, the .Tel is introducing a similar user-friendly text-based
system for the Internet communications space that will bring about
substantial growth by facilitating and standardizing the way people and
businesses extend their names and brands into this space.
Who will control .Tel?
The .Tel Internet-Communications TLD has been awarded by ICANN to Telnic Limited, the Sponsoring Organization.
Telnic Ltd. is a registered UK company. Management of the company
resides in a Board of Directors with policy formulation, advice and
guidance to be delegated to a Policy Advisory Group (PAG).
Telnic has been awarded the registry contract for the .Tel sTLD.
Who is ICANN and what is their role?
ICANN (Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers) is an
international organization responsible for the assignment and oversight
of the generic gTLDs (.com, .net, .org, .biz, etc.) and sponsored sTLDs
(.museum, .aero, .org, etc.). ICANN is the body that has approved the
.Tel domain.

How will .Tel domain names be sold?
As with any ICANN regulated TLD or sTLD, .Tel domain names will be sold through ICANN accredited Registrars or their Resellers.
What is a Registry?
A registry is a database system that contains all registered domain
names. Each Top Level Domain (TLD) requires a unique Registry in which
the domain names are stored.
Registries then format this information and distribute it to the DNS
(Domain Name System) root name servers located around the world. Data
from these root servers is then requested by local name servers when
required.
Telnic Ltd. will select one of the existing ICANN approved Registry Operators to provide backend services for .Tel domain.
What is a Registrar?
Registrars are ICANN licensed companies that provide distribution and
resale of domain names. These companies typically sell multiple TLD
products through their websites, and frequently sell both directly and
through Resellers.
What is a domain name Reseller?
A domain name Reseller is a company that has chosen to forego the
process of becoming an ICANN Authorized Registrar, and therefore must
acquire the domain names they resell from an ICANN Authorized
Registrar.
What is a Registrant?
A Registrant is any individual, corporation or organization that chooses to register a domain name.
What is an End User?
Any individual who accesses content or services using the .Tel sTLD is
considered an End User. There is no requirement that an End User be a
Registrant. Any individual using a properly equipped Internet
communications device can be an End User.
How long until the .Tel sTLD is operational?
Telnic will publish the official timetable for the .Tel in due course, please check back or register your interest by clicking here.
How can I become involved with the Policy Advisory Group?
